Mobility with Exchange

Microsoft Exchange is an e-mail server with plenty of features. Exchange 2003 or later supports integration with smart phones such as the Blackberry, Motorola Q, or the Palm Treo. When you receive a new email at the office, it is pushed to your phone too. In addition to syncing your e-mail folders, your contacts and calendar are also synchronized. This is one of the niftiest features of Exchange and is sure to bring productivity to your business.

There are two ways to connect smart phones to Exchange, Outlook Mobile Access (OMA) and ActiveSync. Essentially OMA is similar to Outlook Web Access providing the majority of all features available on a full browser. Windows Mobile devices and the iPhone utilize this technology. Activesync is used by the Blackberry. It performs “over-the-air” synchronization with your mobile device in near real time.

In our experience, most people prefer the Blackberry for its reliability and superior battery life. If you are interested, call us today and we can talk more about the differences in the technology and which one might be best for your business.

Activesync can work from your desktop without Exchange, but your PC must always be on and working correctly. Running Activesync directly from the Exchange Server is much more reliable.
